Hermes & Thoth what these two masters actually teach
Two foundational texts, explained simply, with an everyday example for every idea · and the bridges between them. Open, play, browse: read this page in whatever order you like.

Read this first. This page gathers traditional esoteric teachings, approached as history of ideas. They are not established scientific facts, not medical advice, and not a belief system to adopt. The interest lies elsewhere: these texts shaped centuries of Western thought, and some of their intuitions connect to very concrete things about attention, habit and decision-making. Take what lights you up, leave the rest.

1Who are these two?
Before the ideas, you need to know where they come from. And a surprise is waiting there.
Hermes Trismegistus · "thrice-greatest"
~1488
The Siena mosaicHermes Trismegistus greets visitors on the cathedral floor · a Renaissance interpretation, not a portrait.
The essence
A legendary figure, not quite Greek and not quite Egyptian, credited with a body of texts about the hidden workings of the world. The most famous is The Kybalion, published in 1908 by three anonymous authors.
In your life
Think "Bourbaki" in mathematics, or "Banksy": a collective name behind which nobody knows exactly who is writing. That doesn't make the content false, but it invites you to judge the ideas on their own worth, not on the authority of the signature.
Dig deeper
"Thrice-greatest" because tradition credits him with three masteries: philosophy, astrology and alchemy. The Kybalion presents itself as the written form of an oral teaching kept secret for millennia · an unverifiable claim, and one the text openly owns.
#transmission#origin
Thoth the Atlantean · scribe of the gods
Ancient Egypt
The ibis-headed manThe classic depiction of Thoth, reed pen in hand · an interpretation after tomb art.
The essence
In the Emerald Tablets, Thoth tells his own story in the first person: born in Atlantis, made immortal, builder of the Great Pyramid, returned to teach the people of Egypt.
In your life
It reads like the story of a mentor who has seen everything and hands you his notes before leaving. Like a workshop journal an artisan leaves to an apprentice · lots of practical advice, a few mysteries deliberately kept.
Dig deeper
The text describes the city of KEOR on the island of UNDAL, the Halls of Amenti beneath the earth, the Children of Light who came down to free mankind, and a being called the Dweller. The version known today is a translation published by one Doreal in 1939.
The trap
Reading the Tablets as a historical document. This is not archaeology: no emerald tablet has ever been found. Read it as a teaching text that uses mythical narrative to pass on ideas · exactly the way a fable uses talking animals.
#transmission#origin#light
The first bridge · and the most striking one
When the Greeks arrived in Egypt, they recognized their Hermes in the Egyptian Thoth and merged the two. "Hermes Trismegistus" was literally born of that marriage. So these are not two masters who happen to resemble each other · it is one figure, told in two languages. Hence the constant echoes between the two texts.
The faces they were given
Nobody knows what these figures looked like · and for good reason: they are figures. Every era reinvented them in its own image. All these works are interpretations: mosaicists, sculptors, engravers and scribes telling the same legend with their hands. Grab a card.

2Hermes · the seven principles
The Kybalion claims the world obeys seven laws, the way physics obeys laws. Understanding even one of them already changes how you look at your day.
1 · Mentalism
The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental.
The train decides nothing · the interpretation decides everything.
The essence
Everything you live goes through your head first. It's not what happens to you that shapes you, it's what you make of it in your mind.
In your life
Two people miss the same train. The first fumes for an hour and gets to the office in a foul mood; the whole day is ruined. The second opens a book on the platform and arrives relaxed. Same missed train, two different days.
Dig deeper
The text speaks of mental transmutation: the ability to transform a situation by changing the state of mind you bring to it. It does not claim the material situation disappears · it claims your experience of that situation is modifiable. A house exists as a mental image before it exists in bricks.
The trap
Confusing this with "positive thinking fixes everything". No. Unpaid rent stays unpaid, an illness stays an illness. The principle is about your inner room for manoeuvre, not a magic wand. And when it's used to tell someone who is suffering that "it's all in their head", it becomes a weapon, not a tool.
Take action
Tonight, take THE annoyance of the day. Write two lines: the bare fact, then the story you told yourself about it. Ask which reading would have moved you forward · that's the one you choose tomorrow. A decision-maker doesn't control events; they control the version of events they keep.
#mind-first#transmutation#mastery
2 · Correspondence
As above, so below; as below, so above.
Four scales, one pattern · the small says something about the large.
The essence
The same patterns repeat at every scale. What you understand about a small thing helps you understand a big one.
In your life
Watch how someone keeps their desk, and you can often guess how they run a project. Watch a family argue at the dinner table, and you find the same roles as in their company. The small says something about the large.
Dig deeper
The Kybalion describes three planes · physical (slow vibrations, dense matter), mental (intermediate), spiritual (fast). The principle asserts that the same laws run through all three. The example given: the structure of the atom and the structure of the galaxy follow comparable patterns.
The trap
Visual resemblance is not proof of causal connection. The atom does not really "orbit" like a solar system · that's an outdated teaching image in physics. Use this principle as a lens for observing, not as a demonstration.
Take action
Pick one small thing you let slide · your inbox, your desk, your end-of-day routine. Keep it impeccable for a week, the way you'd want to run your big project. The small is your training ground: rigour installs itself there at low cost, then climbs the scales on its own.
The essence
Nothing is still, even what looks frozen. And what changes speed changes nature.
In your life
The same remark from a colleague makes you laugh on a rested Monday and stings on an exhausted Thursday. The remark didn't move. And the mood of a room when a cheerful person walks in: nobody said anything, everyone felt it. The text calls this induction · your state rubs off on others, in both directions.
Dig deeper
The text extends the idea to the limits of perception: a note too high becomes inaudible, violet sits at the edge of the visible spectrum. Beyond that, things still exist · you simply stop picking them up. Hence the idea that whole planes of reality could be imperceptible to us without being absent.
The trap
"Vibration" in the hermetic sense is a metaphor for inner state. It is not a frequency measured in hertz, and nobody can sell you a device that "raises your vibration". Beware of any commerce built on that.
Take action
Before your next meeting, take two minutes to decide what state you walk in with · not what you'll say, the state. Then watch the room. Induction works both ways · it might as well be your state that rubs off.
#motion#induction#perception
4 · Polarity
Everything is dual; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree.
lukewarm · in the middle
fearcourage
Not a switch · a dial. Move it and watch the name change.
The essence
The opposite of a thing is often the same thing, at a different dose. Hot and cold are not two substances: they are one scale, temperature.
In your life
You don't have to choose between "poor" and "rich": between the two lie a thousand financial situations, and you can move up one notch. Same for fear and courage. Nobody goes from terror to serenity in one leap · but everybody can climb one notch. And love and hate, in a couple tearing itself apart, resemble each other far more than love and indifference. Extremes touch.
Dig deeper
The Kybalion proposes a mental exercise: picture a dashboard with one dial per domain · money, health, relationships. Check regularly where they sit, and move them up deliberately. It's a technique of attention, not magic.
The trap
Believing that since everything is "the same thing at a different degree", nothing has moral weight. False, and dangerous. A scam and a gift may sit on the same scale of exchange · that does not make them equivalent.
Take action
Pick ONE domain · money, energy, relationships. Score your dial out of 10, without judging yourself. Then define what one single notch up this week would look like, and nothing more. People who move forward don't aim for the far end of the scale: they climb one notch, often.
#dial#degrees#transmutation
5 · Rhythm
Everything flows, out and in; the pendulum-swing manifests in everything.
Nothing changed in your life between the two · it's the pendulum.
The essence
Everything comes and goes. After a rise comes a fall · and after the fall, a rise. It's predictable, therefore usable.
In your life
Knowing this means you stop reading bad days as verdicts. A dip in morale is not a diagnosis, it's a phase. The seasons, breathing in and out, the economy rising and correcting, the excitement at a project's start followed by the mid-project trough. People who finish projects aren't the ones without troughs · they're the ones who know the trough is coming.
Dig deeper
The text distinguishes suffering the pendulum from neutralizing it: consciously deciding not to be carried away by the swing. You don't suppress the movement, you refuse to attach to it emotionally. Rhythm links the three previous principles · correspondence, vibration, polarity.
The trap
Filing real depression under "it's just the pendulum". Sadness that lasts for weeks, that cuts appetite and sleep, is not an oscillation · it's a medical matter. This principle helps you cross grey days; it does not replace a clinician.
Take action
Spot your recurring trough · the day, the hour when everything feels pointless. Schedule the mechanical there (invoices, tidying, email) and keep your important decisions for your peaks. Deciding at the bottom of the pendulum is signing at the worst point of the cycle.
#cycles#pendulum#mastery
6 · Cause and Effect
Nothing happens by chance. Chance is but a name for law not recognized.
The belief builds the behaviour, the behaviour builds the result.
The essence
Everything that happens has a reason, even when you can't see it. Looking for the cause is how you take back the wheel.
In your life
You didn't get the job. "Bad luck." Really? You applied the night before the deadline, without proofreading, because deep down you were convinced you wouldn't be picked. The Kybalion insists: belief is often the first link. And the two positions the text describes: being the pawn or the player. The pawn reacts to whatever lands on it; the player walks back up the chain and acts on the link before.
Dig deeper
The text warns: without awareness of this principle, you get steered by other people's wills without even noticing. Ads, fashions, collective frenzies are causes acting inside you as long as you don't name them.
The trap
The slide toward "you attracted what happened to you". An accident, a mass layoff, a genetic illness are nobody's fault. Looking for causes is fertile; blaming victims is a cruel distortion of the principle.
Take action
Take a recent result you dislike and walk the chain backwards: result ← action ← attitude ← belief. Write down the belief at the first link. That's what you work on · pushing on the last domino has never straightened anything.
#chain#belief#mastery
7 · Gender
Gender is in everything; everything has its masculine and feminine principles.
Twenty ideas in a notebook and no move, or twenty moves and no idea · you need both.
The essence
Every creation takes two gestures: conceiving the idea, then getting it out into the world. Nothing gets created with only one of the two. This has nothing to do with being a man or a woman.
In your life
You have twenty project ideas in a notebook and none of them exists: too much receptive, not enough active. Your neighbour launches everything that crosses their mind without ever thinking: the reverse. One births nothing, the other births anything at all. A good conversation works the same: speaking (active) and listening (receptive). Someone who only talks has a monologue; someone who only listens doesn't exist in the exchange.
Dig deeper
The Kybalion names these two poles the I (the will that directs) and the Me (the subconscious that produces ideas). The imbalance has a precise cost: too much active produces blockage and sterile competition; too much receptive produces passivity and inaction. The proposed exercise is simple · train every day to give and to receive.
The trap
Translating this into "men act, women receive". The text says explicitly the opposite: it speaks of two energies present in every person, thing and situation. The 1908 vocabulary has aged badly; the idea still holds.
Take action
List your three current projects. For each, note what's missing: conceiving or executing? The gap is almost always the same one · that's YOUR imbalance. Compensate deliberately: block one hour of the gesture that costs you most.
#two-forces#balance#creation
3Thoth · the Emerald Tablets
Where Hermes states laws, Thoth tells a story. It's the same teaching, passed on through narrative rather than rule · and the narrative goes further on one point: what to do when things go wrong.
The inner fire
True power comes from inner understanding, not outer force.
The essence
Everyone carries a small flame inside. Feeding it beats going hunting for power outside.
In your life
Two managers. The first gets obedience through fear: it works as long as he's in the room. The second is listened to because he knows what he's talking about: it works even in his absence. The first has force, the second has authority. Thoth is talking about nothing else.
Dig deeper
Thoth describes the Atlanteans drawing their strength from an "eternal fire", and invites meditation on that inner flame as a spark guiding you toward a wider consciousness. He adds that wisdom and power are inseparable · one without the other is a ruin.
The trap
Using "inner work" as an excuse to do nothing outside. Thoth travels, builds, teaches, fights. The inner fire is not an armchair.
Take action
Spot where you get (or seek) obedience through position: title, seniority, tone. Next time, replace the order with an explanation of the why. The authority that remains when you leave the room is built exactly there.
#inner-fire#mastery#light
The struggle of light and darkness
Knowing it is already no longer suffering it blindly.
The essence
Something is permanently pulling toward the light and something toward the dark. Knowing it is already no longer suffering it blindly.
In your life
The colleague who leaves you vaguely discouraged after every chat, without you knowing why. Nothing mean was said. But you come out smaller. Thoth advises exactly this: examine your feelings to distinguish what comes from you from what was placed on you.
Dig deeper
The text speaks of the "brothers of darkness" and their subtle influences · never monsters, always influences. It gives countermeasures: name what you feel, turn deliberately toward what lifts you, and surround yourself with those who pull you upward. It also insists the light wins in the end.
The trap
Sorting people into camps · the luminous and the dark. The text talks about forces and moments, not categories of people. Everyone has their dark days. This frame is for examining influences, never for condemning someone.
Take action
For three days, after every exchange, just note + or − for your energy level. The log will name, beyond appeal, who lifts you and who shrinks you. Then arbitrate your calendar accordingly · your circle is a decision, not an accident.

The cycles and the Halls of Amenti
Until the lesson is learned, the situation returns.
The essence
Nothing truly stops. Everything comes back in another form, and each loop carries a lesson the previous one didn't deliver.
In your life
The same type of conflict that shows up in every job you've had, with different faces. Or that lesson you thought learned, coming around again. Until the lesson is learned, the situation returns. It's the everyday version of the rebirth cycle Thoth describes.
Dig deeper
The Halls of Amenti are described beneath the earth, under sunken Atlantis, lit by the fire of the Infinite. Thirty-two thrones await the Children of Light, who regenerate there between two passages among men. It's an image of memory · a place where knowledge is deposited, kept, then taken up again.
Take action
Write down the conflict or failure that has already happened in two different contexts · two jobs, two projects, two relationships. Name the lesson you haven't taken yet. As long as it stays unnamed, the next loop is already booked.
#cycles#memory#transmission
Passing it on, and to whom
The essence
Knowledge must circulate, but not any old way and not to just anyone: the person has to be ready.
In your life
You've already given someone the perfect advice, the one that took you ten years to understand · and it fell flat. Not because the advice was bad, but because the person wasn't there yet. A year later, they discover the same thing on their own and find it brilliant. Thoth calls this protecting the purity of the mysteries; it's simply the right teaching moment.
Dig deeper
Thoth advises humility, dialogue with everyone, learned or not, following your heart, doing more than is asked, and judging a friend through personal conversation. He carves the Great Pyramid as a "conservatory of knowledge" · a message for those to come.
The trap
Using "they're not ready" as an excuse to hoard knowledge and feel superior. It's the classic vice of esoteric circles. The text says the opposite: Thoth gives freely; he only chooses the moment.
Take action
Your best advice, the one that cost you years: this week, give it only to someone who asked you for it. Compare the effect with all the times you offered it unprompted. Passing it on at the right moment is a leadership skill, not hoarding.
#transmission#humility#discernment
"You are stars bound to bodies"
Your daily grind is not the measure of what you are.
The essence
You are far vaster than the narrow life you're leading right now. The daily grind is not the measure of what you are.
In your life
The moment you realize you've identified with your job title, your parenting role, your status · to the point of forgetting there's someone underneath. Losing a job brutally reveals the difference between what you do and what you are.
Dig deeper
The text's full image: stars orbiting their inner sun. Thoth tells of travelling among civilizations able to build cities out of ether, having transcended physical work · and he always draws the same lesson, brought back to man: seek the light of wisdom, and you will be free.
Take action
Write who you are in three lines, without naming your job, your title or your roles. If the exercise is hard, that's the information. What you build can fail without YOU failing · the ones who bounce back know the difference.

4The eight bridges
The heart of this page. Put the two texts side by side and the same ideas come back, dressed differently. One master gives the law, the other gives the image · and the image often lights up the law. Pick a stone.
1 / 8
1 · Everything starts in the mind #mind-first
Hermes"The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental." The house exists as an image before existing in bricks.
ThothAll existence emanates from one unified source of light. Advanced civilizations manifest their thoughts instantly.
Same assertion: thought precedes form. Usable version: before saying "it's impossible", check whether you're describing reality or manufacturing it.
2 · The small contains the large #mirror
Hermes"As above, so below." The atom and the galaxy.
Thoth"You are stars bound to bodies, revolving around your inner suns."
Thoth gives the intimate version of Hermes' law: the cosmos isn't only outside, it has the same shape inside. Usable version: how you handle a small annoyance teaches you how you'll handle the big one.
3 · The fire and the vibration #inner-fire#motion
HermesEverything vibrates; raising your mental vibrations changes the experience and rubs off on others.
ThothThe inner fire transforms; directing vibratory energy frees from bonds.
Two images for one thing: your inner state is not neutral, it radiates. Usable version: the mood you walk into a room with is already a decision that involves other people.
4 · The two poles, the light and the shadow #dial#light
HermesHot and cold are one scale. You don't flip, you move a dial.
ThothThe struggle of light and darkness runs through everything, permanently, and plays out by degrees.
Hermes supplies what Thoth's narrative was missing: light and shadow are not two camps, they are two ends of one scale. Usable version: you don't have to become someone else. One notch is enough.
5 · The pendulum and the cycles #cycles
HermesEverything swings. You can neutralize the swing by refusing to attach to it.
ThothSuccessive rebirths, cosmic cycles, Seven Lords of the cycles.
Same structure, two time scales: the week in Hermes, the ages in Thoth. Usable version: when you're at the bottom, the only reliable information is that this point is a point of the cycle, not the end of the story.
6 · Becoming the player, not the pawn #mastery
HermesWho ignores the law of cause and effect is steered by other people's wills. Who understands it becomes the player.
ThothTrue power comes from understanding, not outer force.
Both define power the same way: not constraining, understanding. Usable version: in a conflict, whoever has understood the other's logic already has the advantage · without raising their voice.
7 · The two forces that create #two-forces
HermesThe I and the Me · the will that directs, the subconscious that produces. You need both.
ThothWisdom and power are inseparable and together form a perfect whole.
The pair changes name but not function. Usable version: an idea without execution is a regret, an execution without an idea is agitation. Check which of the two you're missing right now · it's almost always the same one.
8 · Passing it on at the right moment #transmission
HermesA teaching kept oral for centuries, delivered when the era can hear it.
ThothTransmit to those who are ready; leave keys in the stone for the seekers to come.
Both texts worry about their own transmission · a sign they see themselves as tools, not dogmas. Usable version: what you've understood is only worth what someone can receive. First check whether you were asked.

5What to actually remember · and what to do with it
If you could keep only one thing from each
From Hermes
Nothing is a switch, everything is a dial. You never have to choose between the state you're in and its absolute opposite · you only have to climb one degree. It's the one idea in the Kybalion that, applied alone, changes a life.
From Thoth
True power comes from understanding, never from force. Everything else in the story · Atlantis, the Halls, the journeys · is the narrative packaging of that sentence.
From both together
These texts don't ask to be believed. They offer tools of attention: look where your dial sits, spot where you are in the cycle, distinguish what comes from you from what comes from elsewhere, check which of the two forces you're missing. Testable daily, with nothing to adopt as belief.
The general trap
The slide from "these images help me see better" to "these laws explain the universe, and whoever doesn't subscribe has understood nothing". The first state makes you more lucid. The second makes you impervious to reality · and vulnerable to anyone who speaks that language with confidence. The difference between the two comes down to one question, worth asking often: what would make me change my mind?
The little check · did you dodge the traps?
Four statements. You call true or false. The stake isn't trivia: each one matches a mistake that costs real money and real energy when you apply these ideas to your life or your business.
1 · "If your rent is unpaid, sufficiently positive thinking can solve the problem."
False. Mentalism is about your inner room for manoeuvre, not a magic wand. Unpaid rent stays unpaid · what changes is what you do with the situation.
2 · "A dip in morale after a stretch of enthusiasm is a predictable phase, not a verdict on your life."
True. That's the principle of Rhythm: the pendulum swings, the trough is part of the cycle. One caution: sadness lasting for weeks is a medical matter, not an oscillation.
3 · "The Emerald Tablets are an archaeological document found in Egypt."
False. No emerald tablet has ever been found. The known text is a 1939 publication · it reads as a teaching text, not archaeology.
4 · "The principle of Gender describes the respective roles of men and women."
False. The text speaks of two energies · conceiving and executing · present in every person, thing and situation. The 1908 vocabulary aged badly; the idea has nothing to do with sex.
