You’re trying to know if you’re in the Talent Trap. You may already have the intuition, without being able to name the mechanism.
The Talent Trap is a concept introduced by Julien Klein in the book Activate Your Expansion. It describes the mechanism by which apparent success imprisons a senior creative. If you’re in the Trap, you’re not alone (35-40% of senior creatives are after 5+ years in their role), and there are precise indicators that characterize it.
Here’s a quick test (5 minutes, 10 questions) to know where you stand. It’s not a superficial quiz. Each question points to a precise mechanism of the Trap.
Test instructions
For each question, simply answer YES or NO, without thinking too long. If a question makes you hesitate for more than 10 seconds, it’s probably YES (the Talent Trap is more present than you think).
At the end, count your YES answers. Your score will give an indication, followed by interpretation and recommended next steps.
The 10 questions
Q1. Sunday evening, you have a knot in your stomach thinking about the week
Not occasionally (everyone has it sometimes). Recurringly, over 6+ months.
Q2. You haven’t created a single thing that resembles you in 12 months
Not a delivered pro project (counts differently). Something that expresses your organic talent, that resembles you, that you’d be proud to sign.
Q3. You regularly tell yourself “I should have done something else with my life”
More than 2 times per month. Intrusive thought that returns.
Q4. You have more money now than at 30, but less joy
Objective calculation. Current salary vs salary at 30. General joy felt daily (not an exceptional weekend, the daily).
Q5. You take medication for sleep, stress, pain, while at 30 you took none
Regular medication, not occasional. Includes sleeping pills, anxiolytics, painkillers, anti-hypertensives.
Q6. You envy independents or pivoters, saying “I can’t do that”
You see someone who pivoted to freelance, or who changed industry, and you tell yourself “I’d like to but it’s not for me” attributing it to external constraints (children, mortgage).
Q7. You know what you should do but you don’t do it
Not a vague intuition. You explicitly know (negotiate an internal pivot, launch a side project, resign, launch an activity) and yet you’re not progressing. For 12+ months.
Q8. Your partner or a loved one told you “you’re not the same”
Phrase received more than 2 times in 12 months, from people who knew you before your current period.
Q9. You come home “drained” without having objectively produced much
Different from burnout from overload (where you’ve objectively worked too much). You come home exhausted after a day of meetings where, factually, you created nothing.
Q10. You compare yourself to others on LinkedIn and systematically feel smaller
Not occasionally (everyone feels this sometimes). Regularly, after each scroll, which pushes you to avoid LinkedIn or scroll it compulsively.
Score interpretation
0 to 2 YES: you’re probably not in the Trap
You may feel normal career frictions, but the structural mechanism of the Talent Trap isn’t operating. Continue what you’re doing, moderate vigilance.
3 to 5 YES: you’re in alert zone
Several Trap signals are present. You’re not yet completely stuck, but the trajectory indicates it. Preventive action recommended within 6 months (internal renegotiation, health audit, organic talent identification). Without intervention, you’ll be at 7-9 YES in 18 months.
6 to 8 YES: you’re in the Talent Trap
The structural mechanism is operating. It’s not a lack of motivation or discipline. It’s a documented mechanism that deconstructs with a specific method (4 CEIA Steps). Action recommended within 60 days to avoid cumulative worsening.
9 or 10 YES: you’re in deep trap
The Trap is advanced. There are probably objective health signals (hypertension, degraded sleep, altered eating). The exit remains possible, but requires structured intervention. Don’t try alone. The risk of rushed pivot is high at this level.
Next steps based on your score
If 0-2 YES: prevention
Read the complete Talent Trap guide to recognize early signals. Identify your main organic talent to ensure regular use.
If 3-5 YES: personal audit
Take the Trap Exit Diagnostic (free, 4 CEIA modules, 15 minutes). Identify your dominant lock among the 6 psychological locks. Set up 1 experimental 7-day Sprint.
If 6-8 YES: structured action
Individual work has probably reached its limits. Consider a structured peer cohort. The Expansion Bootcamp is designed specifically for this level (30 days, 12 people, CEIA method). Prior diagnostic is mandatory before enrollment.
If 9-10 YES: urgency + accompaniment
First check the health dimension (general practitioner, blood test, cardio + sleep markers). The Expansion Bootcamp can intervene, but ideally after medical stabilization. Don’t attempt rushed pivot without support.
FAQ: frequent questions
Can the score evolve?
Yes, in both directions. Without intervention, the score worsens by 1 to 2 points per 12 months on average. With structured intervention, the score can drop by 3 to 5 points in 6 months.
Why this test rather than seeing a coach?
The test is an entry point. It tells you where you stand objectively, but not why. For the why, the Trap Exit Diagnostic (free, more complete, 4 CEIA modules) or individual coaching are the natural next steps.
Does the test work for non-creatives?
The Talent Trap concept is more pronounced in senior creatives (VFX, gaming, design, agencies, tech), but also applies to senior functions in other industries. Adapt the questions to your context. The structural mechanism remains valid.
I have 8 YES but financially impossible to move now
Frequent case. The exit doesn’t mean immediate resignation. It starts with a 7-day Sprint to reactivate your organic talent in parallel to your current role. Then identification of an internal or external pivot with 6-12 month financial preparation.
